[Talk-cz] Tramtrack and highway
Vlákno 30.7. - 30.7.2024, počet zpráv: 2
Hello Czechia OpenStreetMap Community,
I would like to consult you regarding the railway layer/feature in OpenStreetMap. Recently, our analyses and queries have indicated potential issues with this particular layer in the country. The tags highway=* and railway=tram should have separate representations, meaning different and distinct layers on the map. The tram should be captured as a separate way as per the Wiki OSM guidelines, but this is sometimes not the case
? Tag:railway=tram - OpenStreetMap Wiki 3<https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Tag:railway%3Dtram> (Tag:railway=tram)
? Key:embedded_rails - OpenStreetMap Wiki 6<https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Key:embedded_rails> (Key:embedded_rails)
My goal is to support the creation of a MapRoulette challenge to help detect these instances and share them with the community. I am open for your input and remarks
One last remark on why this is important for Tomtom, simply, we want to support map data consistency for all OpenStreetMap users, improving OpenStreetMap to accurately show and display roads with all vehicle accesses, as most people use them for mobility analysis, driving and routing applications.
Here are some examples:
Higway geometry shared with tram 50.10001, 14.39551

50.11168, 14.39401
[cid:image004.png na 01DAE26E.325CBF70]
50.06821, 14.40349

Thank you for any feedback.
Michal

Hello,
((TLDR: yeah, why not; are there enough relevant cases though?))
As your examples show, there are two different usages here: the more common
one (first two attachments: Vítězné náměstí and Podbabská) is a public
transport stop where bus lines and tram lines serve the same platform. This
is not intended for general traffic, not even for buses as a vehicle class,
and should be tagged as such (e.g. access=no, psv=yes). This seems correct
to me, as these are special roads that aren't for public use anyway.
(Similarly for tram tracks that are technically drivable by road vehicles,
but only emergency services are allowed to). Do you also suggest to remap
these into separate ways?
The other case is, IMHO, an actual case of outdated mapping, and something
that could be fixed in a challenge. I think those are a minority, though -
is it worth the effort to set up a challenge for these?
Classifying one or the other (if tags are missing) would probably require
OTG resurvey: I don't think this can be reliably decided from map data
alone.
Best regards,
Honza "Piskvor" Martinec
